Greg Byrnes
A Biota Node in the Backyard –​ ​Native plant regeneration in the urban landscape

General Manager at Te Kohaka o Tuhaitara Trust Greg Byrnes is our first speaker in the Winter Speaker Series.  Greg was born and raised in Christchurch, New Zealand before heading to Australia in his early twenties. Greg has been involved in a number of voluntary organisations and political causes over the years and is a passionate advocate for the environment and social equity to ensure a positive future for all.

His career objective is to utilise his knowledge and experience to influence; and bring about change in the way New Zealanders engage with nature and conservation. He has worked for many local, regional and central government agencies in Australasia during his career in the environment, parks and recreation management. He has also worked in horticultural roles at the Christchurch and Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Centennial & Moore Park Trust and Sunnyside Hospital.

In November 2010, he was appointed to his current position as General Manager at Te Kohaka o Tuhaitara Trust.

Greg completed an apprenticeship in Horticulture and holds a Bachelor of Applied Management majoring in strategic management. He was awarded a Canterbury Horticultural Society ‘Outstanding Horticulturalist’ award in 2017 for his contribution to horticulture.
