COURSE: ANTARCTICA AND THE SOUTHERN OCEAN

Join experienced Antarctic traveller and scientist John Rogers as he takes you on a journey through one of the world’s most remote and undiscovered regions.

This five part course will consist of the following lectures:

The Auckland Islands – The human history of a New Zealand remote wilderness – settlement and shipwrecks

Antarctic Unveiled – Early exploration of Antarctica – James Cook, James Clark Ross, Dumont D’Urville and others

The Antarctic Treaty System – How the world came together to preserve and protect the land and sea south of 60 degrees

Ice and Sky – Looking up and down in Antarctica – current science related to ice, astronomy and atmosphere

History of Whaling – A look at the history of commercial whaling with an emphasis on the Southern Ocean
