Ferns of Aroha: What has happened following the 2019 Christchurch Terrorist Attack
07/05/2021 at 10:00 am - 11:30 am
Entry by koha to the Christchurch Resettlement Services
Being a Christchurch mosque attack survivor himself, Mazharuddin says he has felt it is a responsibility to document the many events (tributes, vigils, support activities etc) that followed the Christchurch mosque terror attack and the effects they had on both the Muslim community and indeed all New Zealanders. Thousands of flowers, messages, soft toys, cards, drawings and mementos left at many places around Christchurch overflowed spontaneously after the March 15 mosque attacks. They were followed by vigils, human chains, tribute events, community walks, a peace train bicycle ride, kapa haka performances, prayers, community dinners, interfaith gatherings and more.
Each one of these events captures a moment in time that helped support a community, bring aroha and connect communities together.
This talk aims to showcase and acknowledge the efforts rendered by the people of Aotearoa, archive the efforts for future generations, spread the message of love, peace, harmony, solidarity and care, and encourage people to continue this show of unity for all communities both in and beyond New Zealand’s shores.
