Ōtukaikino Living Memorial, Belfast
12 February at 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
- Belfast, Christchurch
- Otukaikino, Main North Rd, Belfast, Christchurch
Ötukaikino is a 13-ha freshwater wetland reserve to the north of Christchurch, at the southern end of the northern motorway. The entrance is off Main North Road between Chaneys Corner and the Belfast end of the motorway. It is one of the few remaining original wetlands that were once common around Christchurch.
Since 1992, in a unique partnership between DOC and Lamb & Hayward Ltd, the reserve has undergone a restoration programme. The once willow-infested wetland is now almost clear of willow and other invasive weeds, and as the plantings become established, more native wildlife is being attracted back.
For every funeral arranged by Lamb & Hayward a native plant is planted in the reserve. The trees that are planted are not dedicated to any one person, but instead contribute to form a natural forest community – a “Living Memorial”.
Ötukaikino is significant for Ngäi Tahu whänui and especially appropriate for a living memorial. This wetland was once used for burial preparation and is designated a Wäi Tapu site.
The working bee will be from 9:30am-12:30pm, and we’ll be doing tasks related to plant maintenance around the reserve.
Gloves, tools and morning tea will be provided. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear and a sunhat, and bring along a water bottle. We recommend long sleeves and trousers as protection from the sun and long grass.
We’d love to see you there, so please register here. Contact Donna (firstname.lastname@example.org) 021 457 568 for more information.
