Ōtukaikino Living Memorial, Belfast
30/10/2020 at 9:45 am - 12:00 pm
Otukaikino is a 13ha freshwater wetland reserve to the north of Christchurch that is being restored. It is one of the few remaining original wetlands that were once common around Christchurch. Since 1992 the area has been gradually restored as a “Living Memorial” through a partnership between the Department of Conservation and Lamb & Hayward. For every funeral Lamb & Hayward arrange, a native plant is established in the Living Memorial reserve.
The reserve provides important habitat for an increasing number of native species. Pukeko, shoveller (kuruwhengu), grey teal (tete), marsh crake (koitareke) and even a bittern (matuku) have been spotted in and around the wetland. There are also long and short-finned eel (tuna), common bullies, native snails and a variety of aquatic insects. As the plantings become established, more native wildlife is being attracted back.
The aim of the restoration project is to recreate what the area would have looked like pre-1850 with progressive native plantings and the removal of all invasive weeds like willow, blackberry and beggars tick.
Today we’ll be helping with plant maintenance and weed control to help increase the biodiversity of the reserve. Come along and help out!
