Social Soap Box: Climate Change: Is the Paris agreement enough?

08/08/2018 at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Dr Paul Broady from the University of Canterbury will be taking to our Social Issues Soap box to look at “Reducing climate change – Is the Paris Agreement enough?”

Much thought and action is now being given to reducing the effects of climate change. But what must the global community achieve by the end of the century in order to avoid dangerous shifts in climate? We will mostly focus on a recent (2017) report from James Hansen and his group (Columbia University, U.S.A.) that suggests the stated goal of the Paris Agreement is insufficient. Hansen retired from NASA in 2013 after 46 years of government service in order to take a more active role in the politics of climate change but has also continued in research. We will look at their suggestion for what is needed, the evidence in support of this and whether it can be achieved. Graphs will be involved and it is not entirely simple, but it is worth a go!

Our Social Issues Soap Box is a series of talks/discussions where we invite a speaker to take to the stage and discuss a critical issue of our times.

These events are FREE but a gold coin donation to the WEA is always appreciated!
